Will my dog ever want to go walks again?
Hi, the story is that our rescue dog, a greyhound, has been attacked twice by "roaming" dogs while we were out walking. The first attack was very serious, the second time he got away from me and ran.
Since then it has been almost impossible to get him to leave the yard.
We have him on stress medication and have had a behaviorist vet visit and provide advice and a program to get his confidence back.
It has been weeks now, we have made some slow progress but it's disheartening. He will only go walking like in a pack, with 2 or 3 people, but not with just 1.
We are even getting another foster dog for to help him feel safer which out walking.
He is almost 5, a rescue ex racing greyhound.
Does anyone have any similar experience with their dog? What did you do? What helped your dog? How long did it tacked?
He used to love his walks sooo much and now he just wants to stay at home.
Any proper advice gladly received.
Thanks
Yes, the foster dog is also a grey ( a female). Zoomie was attacked firstly by 2 dogs and had over 20 wounds, 14 of which required stitches. It was only 10 days after the first attack when another unrestrained dog ran at him barking and growling ( to attack him). Zoomie freaked and pulled me over and got free. The other dog couldn't catch him then.
These attacks have so far cost us nearly $3,000 in vet bills! Our dearest hope is that we can get Zoomie back to loving his walks again and are willing to do and try everything!
He is a treasure!

Praise, reward, give a treat for every step he takes forward. Try going to a different location such as a quiet neighborhood without other dogs out walking or an empty mall parking lot after the mall is closed.

First of all, did you get your dog from the greyhound pet's of America?? Cuz I worked there before (: Good place. Fell in love with a couple dogs there. They were ex-racing dogs.
Anyway, I recommend keeping him on his meds and keep taking him to therapy and gradually get him used to being outside again. Like start from the yard and eventually walk him a few feet away from your house, but not too far, then back and then just keep going further and further until he gets comfortable with walking again. Animals--especially dogs--are very strong animals. They can handle a lot and soon the trauma will settle down and he'll be okay again. Hope it works out (:
-P.S. Don't let him get attacked lol-

Greyhounds live their whole lives around other greyhounds until they are adopted. Enlist the aid of other greyhound owners to walk in groups. Some areas even have organizations of GH adopters who do group outings (e.g. www.greyhoundadventures.org). How about adopting a "greymate" for him? Or will the foster dog be a GH? If so, unless the foster is himself very skittish, that should do the trick. Get yourself some pepper spray so you can ward off any future attacks.
