First, what is the shirt made of? If there's any synthetic material in it, it will not take a dye; it will look not splotchy, but more like oxford cloth (white with the other color).
You also have to know what the threads/seams are made of. If the shirt is all cotton but the seams are done with polyester stitching, the shirt will dye, and the seams will remain white.
that being said, select a dye (I've used Rit, which has been around forever), and follow the directions. Don't use your washer to dye; it's a nasty clean up job. Use a smaller bucket or plastic container.
