Windows XP repair problem?

My computer failed to boot complaining "cannot find xxxx"

I tried to repair using the re-installation disc but that but the computer complained that this was insecure and needed updating. Updating to service pack 2 gave an error and ever since I cannot print anything or copy and paste or update.

Would it make sense to get a new hard drive and install Windows on that ?

Update:

Thanks all.The computer will n.ot move anything to CD so I can see files but not make backups. If I installed windows on a new hard disk with the old one as slave I might then be able to get at them. The computer is 8 years old and I am assuming that the hard disc is the most likely item to wear out giving the initial fault.

well, since it looks like u have no intention of recovering the data inside, then i suggest you start the installation from scratch.. re-format your drive, and install windows (clean install)..

i presume you only tried doing the repair and update, so why not give this a shot? i don't think your hard drive needs replacement..

Just do a clean install. But before formatting your hard drive, backup the really important files you want to keep. Then re-install XP onto it then copy all your files back on. Done Diddly!

If you have been having problems, the steps you have taken should have resolved them. Re-formatting your hard drive is an option, however the cost of a new Hard drive coupled with the problems you have had may not be a bad solution. It is not a big job.

if u have the XP disc, re-install it.

make sure u dont delete any other partions (eg - D:\, E:\).

format the partition that contains XP (usually C:\). make a fresh install.

this way u can save some data.

in case you will get to the activity supervisor (which you would be able to from what you're saying), interior the "applications" tab, click on the button "new activity" and variety in "explorer". that should carry returned the beginning up menu and laptop icons. that may not restore the unique concern, nevertheless, basically enable you to locate and see what's inflicting this. consistent with threat explorer.exe is broken and should be reloaded from an set up disk? or consistent with threat for although reason, it have been given deleted from the startup centers? puzzling to declare.
