My daughter is 19, in the Air Force...with no drivers license yet?

She just got out of basic training and tech school and will be stationed in Florida. Should she get one in PA (where we live) or would she get one in Florida ...and does she have to have a permit first?

She should get a DL in her home state if possible but it is not important if she does not.

At 19 she should be able to take the written test and the behind the wheel test and nothing more.

Base assignments are temporary and she may be re-assigned to another anytime. It is best if she chooses you and your home as her "permanant address" until such time that she chooses a place of her own.

This will keep future informational needs and qualifications for taxes and jobs or running for a political office from being tangled up.

You can't obtain a driver's license in a state you don't live in. You have to show proof of residency in order to be issued the license. So if she lives in Florida, she must obtain a Florida driver's license. However, if her residence is currently in Pennsylvania, and she's planning to get the license prior to actually moving to Florida, then she must either obtain a Pennsylvania license and then apply for a Florida license after she moves (at which point the PA license becomes invalid), or simply wait until she moves to obtain a license.

As far as the permit is concerned, you will have to check with your local DMV or the one in Florida. Every state has it's own laws.

She lives in Florida so legally she should get a drivers license in Florida. She will need to take the test...the permit is for learning to drive.

It really doesn't matter where she gets her driver's license from--whatever is most convenient for her. And because she's over 18, I don't believe she needs a permit; she just needs to study for the written test and do a little low-key parking lot driving to get ready for the tactile portion of the driving test. She should be fine :)

    Hello Parents,

NO. She should get a Florida driver's license as she is going to be in Florida for the next 3 years remaining on her enlistment.

She will go to the Florida Driver's License facility and get a learner's permit and learn to drive. She will need someone to help her in their car until she can go for the test.

She should rely on her supervisor at her job to help out. This is nothing that you parents can do for her. She is an adult and of legal age.

She will need to buy her own car, get it registered in Florida with Florida plates because she can't keep coming up to Pennsylvania every year to renew the plates just to get the little sticker.

If she reenlists and goes overseas then she has to bring her car home and you will store it for her in the garage until her 24 month tour is over. Then, she can go to her next base and reregister her car in that state. Of do what I did. I brought my car to my father in Philadelphia and sold it to him. He used it and traded it in. When I came back from Okinawa after a 5 year long tour I bought a new car, in New York, got temporary registration tag, drove it to Illinois and registered it in Illinois.

There is a special rule for military people regarding driving and licensing a vehicle. You can not have 3 states involved.

You can not have a car with Iowa plates; you have a Pennsylvania driver's license, and be stationed in Florida. It's all about who gets to tax us. You can only have two states involved. You can have a Florida driver's license be stationed in Florida and have a car with Iowa plates. As long as you can keep everything current. You can not drive on expired registration or license. So, the easiest thing to do is get it all done in the state you are actually stationed at for 3+ years.

She is going to have to buy a car and learn to drive. There is no adequate public transportation in the Air Force. EVERYBODY must have a car for anything. Even to get to work. You can't hoof it from the dorms to the work place. It's too far! Always too far.

    Best wishes,

Either state! If she hasn't had any driving lessons, she needs to sign-up before she can get her drivers license!
