If you had to choose, a larger sink or counter top space?

I am remodeling a very small kitchen on a budget, which means that we have to go with standardized sizes. I have 54" of width space available to fit all the counter top for the whole kitchen and the kitchen sink. My options are either a double sink and 18" of counter (the size of a single drying rack) or a single sink and 24" of counter. Which would you opt for if the decision was yours to make?

Update:

Also, does it make a difference that there will be a kitchen table to do prep on?

If you do a lot of cooking from scratch, you'll want prep area near the stove. If you eat ready meals off china and like things neat, you can have a double sink to do wash and rinse.

I'd go for the larger countertop. Unless you use/fill the sink a lot, a surface is more useful.

If the table to good for prepwork and you have enough space however, then the sink could be conceivable. Still, I'd go for counter, much more usable in my opinion.

I would have to know if you are going to have a dishwasher before I could help with that decision. If no dishwasher then I would have to say double sink.

I would go for the counter top.
