Membrane Spanning Proteins?

Why are Tryptophan and Tyrosine most often found at the polar/nonpolar region of a membrane spanning protein? We went through this in lecture but I didn't write it down because it seemed obvious at the time. However, it is now finals time and it is no longer obvious.

both amino acids are nonpolar (hydrophobic) so they are found in the nonpolar part of the protein
