Military will not get pay checks during the shutdown. School, police and ambulances will continue, because they are run by local government, which is not shutting down. The postal service is federal, but that is an exception and will continue.

Your dad will still be earning his pay, once the government is funded again, he will receive all the pay that he has gone without during that time. Schools, police, firefighters, and ambulances are funded by the state governments, not the federal, so they'll be fine. Yes the post offices will still be open, but like your dad, the employees won't receive their paychecks until the government has received funding.

Nothing will happen. 98 percent of the government will continue to operate. It's all pretty much a publicity stunt by both sides.
