Potty training a toddler boy?

Mothers of sons, please help with this.

I have a son who is almost 21 months. At 19 months I brought him a potty. So far he knows what it's for (eg he sits on it) but he hasn't done anything yet. I know it's only early so not overly worried, but I have been told by a few mothers of sons that little boys take longer to potty train than girls. Is this true?

He knows when he has wet/dirtied his nappy (diaper) and tries to take it off. Do you think I should just wait til he's a bit older or just continue with leaving his nappy off during the day (apart from nap times) so eventually he will wee/poop on the potty?

Thanks in advance :)

Update:

Thanks Monica. I am not really in a hurry because I want him (just like my other kids who are girls) to go at his own pace. He is still young too.

Keep his diaper on during the day. When he dirties it, change him and then have him watch you as you put the content of the diaper in the plastic potty. Then dump the potties content into the regular toilet. Tell him that when he is ready, he can go in to potty. Then ask him throughout the day if he has to go potty in the plastic potty. One day he will catch on and go in to plastic potty. When he does, don't forget the praise.

My son just turned 2 years old on Thursday and I tried to start him out going potty a couple months ago. First time he sat on the potty he pooped and peed twice in one day! I was so proud. Ever since, he doesn't want anything to do with going potty on it. I know he will get it eventually but I really like Cookie's idea about taking the contents of a diaper, putting it in the potty chair then emptying it in the toilet. I think I will try that as well so he sees how it's supposed to work. Mason gets it.... he just wants to play around now and he tries to put his foot in the potty chair or he dismantles it and laughs. LOL I'll ask him if he wants to go potty and he says yes. He'll take his diaper off, sits down for about 30 seconds and then runs around naked. LOL I'm going to start working on it diligently now but I'm not going to put too much emphasis on it until he turns 2.5 years old.

I don't know who is faster. But I do know how fast they're potty trained depends partly on their personality. Personally, unless you need to send him to a daycare where being in a diaper will cause problems, I would wait until he's ready. My daughter is very easy going. She was in no hurry to start walking (not until 15 months) and she wasn't in a hurry to get out of her diapers either. We did make sure she was trained by age 3 though :)
