Could I feed a Burmese Python raw/boiled chicken?

I really love snakes, and I've owned smaller snakes previously. I have no problem feeding pre-killed animals such as frozen mice and rats. However, I'm considering purchasing an albino burmese python and I an well aware of how large they can mature to be, and the reptile store I would be purchasing the snake from feeds their adult burmese python rabbits and guinea pigs. Being a rabbit owner, I could never do that, though I know it's the natural way, and I'm not sure if you could get "pre killed" guinea pigs and rabbits, or even if I'd want to.

Now I know this isn't the best place to get information, but I was watching Animal Planet's "Fatal Attractions" and this snake fanatic was feeding his 13-foot burmese python boiled chicken. I was wondering if that was a healthy, plausible option or if I should abandon my dreams of the burmese python and stick to smaller snakes?

Thanks so much in advance for the info, I appreciate it!

Well if you want a Burmese then you have to be prepared to feed it properly.

You can get frozen rabbits, guinea pigs, quail and when it gets larger you can get actual pigs and piglets.I have been thinking trying piglets for my adult boas. There is nothing wrong with feeding it fowl. Chicken prepared for human consumption has had all the organ removed. They need whole prey animals for proper nutrition.

Burmese pythons do not eat cooked foods in the wild so that should tell you something. Many of the cases on " Fatal Attractions" involve situations that far and beyond and sometimes, insanely extreme. Feeding a Burmese python a boiled chicken is not a good choice. It would be best to stick to smaller snake species I think because of your doubts about owning and feeding a giant snake like this and, because a fully grown Burmese python does have the potential of killing it's owner.

I would say not. You could feed it a whole frozen/thawed chicken(not the ones you buy in the grocery store but an actual whole chicken with feathers and everything). You can also buy Buy frozen/thawed rabbits if its the whole feeding it live rabbits bothers you(rabbits are terrible to feed live anyways, they scream and its unbearable). Ii is a big snake so whatever you do feed it you are going to have to be willing to pay a lot more. But like everyone else said, the whole cooked meat thing isn't going to work out. Animal planet is terrible when it comes to snake. They, just like every other media source, make snakes out to be much worse than they are. Good luck.

  • My baby is +14 feet. I wouldn't afford the rats as they would bite him every time I fed him. I don't believe in killing several jumbo rats twice a week as Mother Nature doesn't thump them in nature. I did an experiment and dangled a large raw chicken leg in front of him; he hit! A boneless chicken breast coated in calcium powder and my equate 'Complete Multivitamin' from Walmart which I crush with a pliers seems to satisfy him. I use the same Ziplock bag over and over however keep it refrigerated for about 2 months before throwing it away. I went from $43.45 per week to about $2.50 a week. Every snake is different however I suggest trying this. It's worth a try; you still have to dangle it like a marionette for it to strike. I was paying $9.99 for each jumbo rat. Chicken is cheap! I still give him something alive every month or so. Flea markets are a gold mine with the critters they sell! Sounds bad but we're talking pound for pound feeding; right...?

no you could not feed them boiled chicken, snakes are not supposed to eat cooked meat. you can order frozen rabbits thought places like rodent pro.. or you could just feed it jumbo rats as an adult it would take like 10 or more depending on the size. my friend is allergic to rabbits so he feeds his mostly rats and then rabbist now and then. his burms are very large 16-18 footers and the females are over 150 pounds for most.

i wouldn't suggest it, especially since you saw this on "fatal attractions". if you were to try it i would strongly suggest lots of research and even ask a pet store expert their opinion. if the snake is already used to eating one thing, it can be very difficult to get him/her to switch over. you can try to feed it a certain number of rats to fill it up, but don't take my word for it because im not to sure about huge snakes. like i said before, do lots of research and make sure you have a reliable source because snakes can be touchy creatures.
