Bahamas customs - rules on bringing gifts for residents?

I'm visiting a friend in the Bahamas. I live in the US. Can I bring her a gift without paying duty?

Technically. NO.. you cannot. If it's a dutiable product, then you are required to pay duty on it.

You are allowed to bring in only items for your own personal use.

That being said, I have brought in small gifts and other things and just walked thru customs. If they chose to inspect my case, I would have to pay duty on the implied value of the item. (unless you have the receipt.)

Now that I am a resident, It's harder to get things thru customs.

If you gonna bring a laptop or flatscreen monitor they're duty free,if you gonna bring a rolex watch, wear it on your wrist and it becomes duty free, same thing with a gold chain, expensive dress well thats your personal property and keep on walking, have a good trip.
