B&A. Have you ever read a book and thought "it could have been better?"?

I was wondering for all the readers (and writers) out there, have you ever read a published novel and thought 'Mm, I could make it interesting this way.' Or thought. 'That's good about this item, but if done this way, it could possibly be better?' Is that our 'writers eye' looking over a novel and thinking "what could I have done to make it better, or to push the creative barrier to the furthest it can go?"

Thoughts? Opinions?

Update:

-shakes head.- Damn that ?"? my bad.

Yes, all the time. The Percy Jackson series are nice and all, but could have been written much better. They lack good character development.

Of course. I have read many books where it could have been better, but that doesn't mean I didn't like them.

To be honest, I slate the House of Night series, but the actual IDEA is really good. I think it could have been SO much better if you gave that idea to another writer. Then it could have been literally amazing.

I think all readers have felt that way at some point in time. I have often thought that if "x" was presented a certain way, then "y" would have reacted differently, therefore the result "Z" would have been different, so that down the line the end would have made more sense to me.

The ending of The Shining could have been better. I like how Jack dies to save his family but ending it with Danny, Wendy and the cook chillaxing by a lake wasn't the BEST thing Stephen King could have done.

Yep. I hate when a book starts out really well and I think it's heading in a particular interesting direction, and then the author does something else, in an inferior way.

Course I have, most people have thought that at some point or other. And in some cases, I probably could have done it better but not most of the time.

Yes. I've read many books that had a great plot but it just didn't work the way the author wrote it.
