Tips and advice for trip to India?

I am going to India in October with my family. We are going to travel around for 9 days in the north western part of the country.

I would like to hear from people who have been there/live there, if they have any tips on what to do/not to do. For example I have heard that women can't wear shorts and tshirts or dresses that show shoulders, knees or elbows. Is that correct?

Is there anything to be aware of etc?

    Hi,

India is a very good place. You will have to keep following things in your mind when you go to India.

Don't eat in a restaurant where there is no one else. This is a sign that food may not be fresh.

If you've just arrived into town, getting a guide may be worth you're while. Pre-negotitation of a price is of utmost importance, and learn that whatever price is their starting point, it is a rip-off in the scale of the Indian economy.

Always keep your passport and any other important papers close to you. Don’t leave important documents in your luggage. Also, keep two photographs and your passport information in a safe, separate place in case your passport is lost or stolen.

Don’t give money to beggars; offer to buy them a meal instead.

Most Indians are warm people and ready to help whenever the need be. But still, exercise caution and stay away from over friendly strangers.

Trust your instinct if you feel something is not right while traveling.

Do not depend on strangers to book tickets for you. Contact a recognized travel agency.

Make sure you drink bottled water or packaged mineral water .

Try and avoid spicy food, especially if you’re not used to it.

Do not carry huge sums of money with you and flash it in public.

Dress up in a way that you don't hurt the Indian sensibilities. You will end inviting unwanted attention.

Avoid confronting anyone with physical violence. India is a peace loving country and violent acts can invite the fury of the Indians.

While visiting a place of worship, make sure you remove your footwear. You can deposit them in the temple cloakroom and collect it on your way out. Some places might also require you to cover your head.

Stay in a recognized hotel. India has a number of 5 star and 4 star hotels to suit your taste and budget.

Carry your medicines and other medical requirements with yourself always. You never know when it may come handy.

Keep all your important documents and money safely and never leave valuables unattended.

Do not smoke in public places.

Ask for permission before clicking pictures of women and religious complexes. Some places charge for taking pictures while it is prohibited at a few places as well.

Be wary of roadside peddlers trying to sell you semi-precious and precious gems and jewelry.

Bargaining is the norm in local bazaars selling products without a written price. Resist the urge to buy without comparing prices from shops selling similar stuff.

    Hope this helped.Enjoy your trip.

Alan obviously has a very warped sense of Indians. In the NW of India, depending on the time that you are going u will have to chose the outfit. In Kashmir which is a predominantly Muslim area, halter tops and shorts will be frowned upon. However in other parts of India dress will not cause eyebrows to be raised, however a modicum of decency that is universally accepted should be followed. Have a good time.
