How long does it take Advantage 2 to kill fleas on my dog?

I treated my dog with Advantage 2 four days ago and last night I found a live flea on her! Advantage 2 says it kills fleas, larva, eggs and ticks. Is it normal to still find one alive after three days? I also treated the carpets and upholstery with Borax and salt about two days ago. I don't know why these darn things wont go away! Should I be patient or am I doing something wrong?

Update:

Advantage 2 is NOT a flea preventer alone, it is only sold by vets and petsmart has it in locked cases. It is meant to kill fleas, larva, eggs, and ticks, just like frontline.

Update 2:

tbug- I didn't know that my dog had fleas until a week ago. I live in CO where we don't usually have a flea problem from what I've heard until the past few years with all of the hurricane Katrina dogs being sent here.

Update 3:

Also, the sprays have a ton of chemicals in them and I'm afraid to use them since I have a 2 year old in the house. I've heard they can cause nerve damage.

i have never used Advantage but with must flea Products it take a few hours to kill flea after there are on your dog frontline will kill fleas up to 12 hours after the flea is on him

if it was only 1 flea i would not worry about it as it will die a few hours after

also used advocate and it is great kills worms fleas ticks and is use by vets

you could do what i call the sock test

walk around with a pair of white socks on and see if you get any fleas on your sock if you do you will know on where they and two if you still have a problem

you could also leave a wet piece of paper down make sure it is white if you see little red drops on it then they are still in your house

over the years i have tyred many things that people have told me about and none ever worked in the end i would be out of pocked a few quid ad still have to do in the pesticide people so just go for them its better in the long run

Advantage is a flea a tick preventative. If she wasn't being treated for fleas prior to getting fleas you need to get to the vet. The vet will give you a simple medication for your dog which will kill any fleas she has. Please do this asap though--fleas are extremely painful for dogs and can spread quickly through your home and infest it.

You should have treated her weeks before you had any infestation. It will take awhile for the medication to kick in. Keep cleaning her bedding and use a good premises spray to do the carpets and floors.
