Would this be acceptable to wear?

I have a student council conference banquet on Tuesday. The dress is business/Sunday. The details say shirt and tie for gentlemen, but I plan on wearing a button down shirt with khaki pants and a belt. Would this work?

You would be fine! It would actually look better to wear a button down and be more comfy than have to dress up in some suit and tie and feel uncomfortable the whole time! Just be yourself and if they've gotta problem about it, oh well! :)

No, if the dress code says business then they mean a formal shirt (not normally button down) and tie with a jacket and dress trousers, most certainly not khaki trousers as these are casual and only at very best smart casual.
