What is the smallest practical boat to take on Lake Michigan?

How small is too small? Not looking for far offshore, but want to do more than the small lakes in my area.

I'm looking at an 18 foot runabout.

Just my opinion, but I think an 18' runabout is just a little bit to small. I'd like a 26' but that might not be piratical. I remember years ago discussing waves, and how a boat rides them. If the wave "period" is low and the height of the waves less that a foot or two, an 18' is ok, but once you get a height of 2ft. and up, it's a different matter.

There aren't many days that Lake Michigan has less than 2 ft. waves.

This is one of those areas where you will be the best judge.
