AT&T Alternate Option: Smartphone w/ No Data Plan?
My wife and I have recently switched our phone service from Centennial Wireless to AT&T, since both companies merged. We have been using our unlocked smartphones for several years and have no had to use a data plan. Both phones have WiFi.
This year, AT&T has changed their Terms and Services. Their systems recognize what kind of phone you are using. In our case, we are using smartphones. The system automatically adds a Data Plan to each phone without notice. We originally switched to AT&T to save money, and now we are forced to pay an additional $15 per line.
My questions:
- Can we switch to PrePaid / GoPhone and keep our numbers?
- We should be able to utilize our phones on each of these services, but would we be safe from the forced data plan?
Most people would tell us to go get flip phones or downgrade. Why downgrade when we have perfectly working devices that do everything we need?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
- Our phones were not purchased from AT&T.
- We are under no contract with AT&T.

Yes you can port your number from the ATT Post Paid to GoPhone prepaid, and the system will not automaticly put u on a data plan when u are on preiad.
I have tried this before when i have a iPhone and i wanted to just use it for calls and text, and i went and got a iPhone and used it on att go phone plan, i was paying 60 dollars a month for unlimited calls and text and piture mail, thats it.
Att did not touch my account when it comes to automaicly adding a data plan to my account because it is prepaid not a contract.
So yes u are able to do that without no problem
But
If i may recommed this to u, u have 2 unlocked smartphones, an u want to go with att go phone, and pay 60 dollars for unlimited calls text and picture mail, why not go over to Simple mobile and pay the same price and get unlimited data with also, for the ame 60 dollars month and u get 4G depends on what unlocke phone model u have.
But that was only a suggestion, the answer to your question is on top.

Don't be too hard on your parents. Data plans cost $20 plus up and that does not include texting and mobil. You would be looking at at least $60 phone bill per month, but will say $75 to be safe. So that would be $900 dollars a year. You can't buy a smart phone without a data plan. It just the way the cellphone companies work. And it would be pointless to have a smartphone without one. If all your going to do it talk and text then all you need is a basic texting phone. You're only option would be an itouch, but then you can't call anyone. What would you use the phone for would be the better question? Why do you want a smartphone if you can't have the data plan with it. What would you do with it? (If it were possible to have one w/o the data plan) You can't go online with it. My sisters both would really like a smart phone, but you can't upgrade to one of those phone without a data plan. It would let you until you change your plan to add a data plan to it. It's just not possible to have one without the other. So unless you want to pay for the data plan. Your stuck with what your parents give you.

"Why downgrade when we have perfectly working devices that do everything we need?"
I thought you answered this question - you didn't want the networks to automatically assign you to an expensive data plan. That's why you want to downgrade.
