The 'correct' way to drink it is straight up - room temperature, no ice, no water.
However, don't go with that just because some snob is telling you to - have it whatever way you like! add water, ice, a twist of lemon, lemonade, coke or whatever suits your tastebuds! Everyone has different tastes, there is a recommended way of drinking it but of course that is not how everybody likes it. Try it a few different ways and settle on the one you like.
Also, take into account your environment, it might be great at room temperature in chilly scotland, but if you live in a hot country, ice and lemonade might be the best way to have it.

When i lived in Edinburgh we went on the Whisky tour. We did a tasting and they served it room temp with a glass of water.
According to http://www.scotchwhisky.net/drinking/index.htm
It should be noted that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to drink Scotch whisky – it is very much down to a question of personal taste. However, let us offer a few basic suggestions and, for those interested in pursuing the pleasures of “nosing” and “tasting” further, we provide a link below to a detailed introduction to “nosing and tasting” scotch whisky.
Many who drink Scotch whisky neat say they do not want to spoil the taste by adding water. However, equally as many will say that adding a touch of water, particularly if it is pure, soft spring water, (ideally the same spring water used in the making of the particular whisky!) serves to enhance the distinctive aroma and flavour of a whisky. Tap water may contain high amounts of chlorine and therefore would not complement any whisky - your best bet is to opt for bottled Scottish mineral water!
Adding ice to a whisky can provide a refreshing drink but it should be noted that it will dull the fine taste and wonderful aromas and so should never be contemplated when conducting a “whisky nosing and tasting.” Similarly, carbonated water is not an ideal accompaniment for whisky as it will also interfere with the aromas.
The addition of mixers such as ginger ale, soda and even coca cola, is a popular trend, however it does beg the question - why drink whisky at all if you need to mask the taste?
"Nosing” and “Tasting"
The sense of smell is one of the most sophisticated of all the senses, and the pleasure that can be gained from “nosing and tasting” the many wonderful and varied scotch whiskies available today is an experience that should be treasured. This is particularly true if it is experienced in a convivial atmosphere with a group of friends – old or new.

Single malts should never be served on the rocks. The cold temp takes away from the amazing flavours. Room temperature spring water is the way to go. Just a touch mind you. I would say 20%. Brings out more flavours for some reason. Been doing it for 40 years. Used to drink it straight but take my advice and add a bit of spring water for better flavours.

Single malt is one of the most desired Scotch Whiskies. You certainly have respect for it, wanting to serve it right but it's up to the people drinking it. Connoisseurs would say, no ice to dilute it. Some would drink it room temperature but your idea of chilling it sounds good. If too strong for your taste then dilute it with a little ice water.

In small portions in front of an open fire with a cat on your lap. a single matured malt with aromas from moores and nature will be pure meditation.
Cheers.
On the rocks is for blended whiskys in mingling parties

I drink malt whisky only with more of the same malt whisky. Try that first - you can always add water or a mixer if you want - but you can't take it out once its in.

Serve at room temp, either neat or with a little bit of water. No ice! Spring water is better than tap water. Ideally, you'd use the same water that the whiskey made with, but unless you're in Scotland, that could be difficult. Sip slowly, and Enjoy!

Most Scotch drinkers keep it room temp. and then serve over ice, my dad used to put four fingers high in a tumbler glass and top with cold water and ice.
