it was a republic hence THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS......we wanted no part of any other nation...remember have had 6 flags fly over our land but to survive on our own was not easy because the US was putting a strong hold on our ability to trade with their states and so on.....so in a deal with the US we agreed to be part of the US with several provision the most important that if we, TEXAS, ever wanted to leave the US we could, hence secede.....the likelihood of that ever happening is extremely hard because in our haste to join we forgot one most important thing....that by joining the US we gave them the rights to our lands on paper so in order for us to leave we must PURCHASE Texas back from the US at a price that would take us two centuries to save......that is way many times we are called the hardheaded of the states, the ones you don't mess with, and us women voted against alimony and palimony because we don't men to give us what we need we get it OURSELVES.....if i'm not mistaken we are the only state that has that.....

It's never been a country... It tried to become one though, but after realizing it couldn't be independent, it decided to join the US, after separating from Mexico.
