Are the hyper-masculine gay guys just not socially perceived as gay by most people?
I find people ask why gay guys are all effeminate on here at least once a day. And I got to wondering, whenever I go to a gay bar I see a tonne of guys who are hyper-masculine, go to the gym probably every day, never eat carbs, and have bodies that are pretty crazy. Then there are the leather guys who take that even further, and are crazy huge and would pass for bikers by most people's expectations.
So is it that TV and movies portray gay guys as effeminate, and that is the only thing that average people see when they spot a gay guy on the street, what they expect to see as a gay guy walking down the street. Why don't they seem to notice the guys who fall at the other end of the spectrum and are pretty much more masculine that the average hetero guy. Do they just not even expect this sort of person to actually be gay?

The 'bear' movement arose in the 80's as a kind of a reaction against the perception of gay men as effeminate queens to show virile, blue-collar men could live alternative lifestyles as much as anybody else. Many body builders, bikers, skinheads and fetishists fall under this rubric.
However, the way I see it today, there is not much of a difference between bears and queens these days as bear culture has been all but assimilated into the shallow, alcopop-swilling, middle-class mediocrity that mainstream gays had long since resigned themselves to.
It's hard to believe how many self-proclaimed bears now listen to female pop singers, sing karaoke, buy 500 items of clothing a year, go clubbing three times a week, obsess over the all latest handheld gadgets and take an inappropriate interest in current trends and fashions for a middle-aged man. Mindless automations the lot of them.

Basically, yeah. The media represents us a effeminate, so it's what people expect.
It's also partly because effeminate guys are seen as specific to gay culture. Straight guys generally don't act very effeminate.
So people realize that most effeminate guys are gay, and then they assume that means that most gay guys are effeminate.

But just like straight people, we come in all different shapes, sizes, and styles.

true, straight people do not want to believe that masculine gay men exist because then they would have to recognize that if this masculine guy is gay i might be too.
which is totally ridiculous, but there you go.
