In the first place, since the lockout they have been near the bottom in home attendance every year. Players like to play in front of large appreciative crowds. So Columbus is not high on the radar for free agents.

Secondly, and also because of this attendance, the team can't spend near the cap. They are and always have been a budget based team. So they don't overspend in order to attract free agents.

Thirdly, they have the unenviable record of picking next after a prize pick in the draft was chosen. Filatov after Luke Schenn, Voracek after Sam Gagner, Brassard after Kessel, Brule after Carey Price, Pickard after Rostislav Olesz, Zherdev after Nathan Horton. If they had been just a little worse in those years they might be a lot better today.

Next they don't seem to find any gems in the late rounds either maybe they just have a poor scouting team.

It generally takes a bunch of all these things to change. I'd start with the scouting staff and go from there.

I feel the Columbus Blue Jackets are unsuccessful every year due to many things. First off Columbus has 3 sport teams; an arena football team (Destroyers) and a minor league baseball team (Clippers). So it seems to me that it is not a good location for marketing. Ohio in general is actually useless for sports now except for college with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Cleveland is also a very poor sports based city, especially with LeBron James "taking his talent" and leaving the Cavaliers. The team was established in 2000 so it is still a fairly young franchise. Most teams have winning traditions or have a great fan base established.

They have great players in Mason, Nash, Umberger, Upshall, etc but the teams needs to be marketed more. I believe it has a lot to do with the front office. The Blue Jackets need to invest in "young hope" like the Edmonton Oilers and St. Louis Blues. For example, the Philadelphia Flyers had lots of young hope years ago and many of those players still play for them. What Columbus needs to do is get some great scouts and developing coaches. Draft very good and focus on making those players ready for the NHL. Who knows, one of those players might just help lead them into the playoffs.

Overall, I feel they lack many resources on and off the ice. It I feel has a good location with such lack of professional teams that people may start taking an interest in them. They need to go after the kids first because that is where burning passion for a team begins and as kids grow up, most stay loyal into adulthood.

easy ill list u the reasons why the team stinks every year:

    1) they dont have true legit number one goaltending

    2) they dont have 1 dman that is actually considered a true #1 dman like a lidstrom boyle chara doughty

    3) they lack a true number one center like a toews crosby which every successful team has in order to have success and give the wingers a chance to fully perform

    4) they rushed their prospects in order to try to help the big team and its hurting them just look at brassard voracek filatov
