Who do authors rely on to check the technical?

details in their fictional stories? It may just be me but I seem to run across some of the most glaring inaccuracies of things like U.S. Naval warships (from a supposed "expert"), firearms, military support gear including basic things like MRE's, basic mechanical details....

Since I try to ingest the entire yarn, these things detract from the story quite a bit.

So, who does this technical review process and how do I get in on it?

Update:

That "absoluteWrite" forum looks darn good! Wish some supposed "expert" authors would use it!

While each author is supposed to do such complete research that no errors make it to print, obviously that's not always how it goes.

If you want to volunteer your expertise, I recommend you join AbsoluteWrite, which has a board specifically for authors to seek experts and get questions answered. I've gotten great help there in the past, but sometimes nobody happens to know what I need to find out.

Current military information is going to be extremely useful to some of the authors there. If you've got the time, they'd love to explore your brain.

No one does a technical review process. It is up to the author to confirm that all the facts are right. The publisher/editor might do a little bit of checking but nothing serious.
