Automatic fish feeding?

I volunteered to take care of some outside goldfish, 2 each, 8" or less long, feed them handful of food twice a week, this will be going on for a month. I got thinking about auto feeders later and Googled them, would an Aqua Chef supply enough ? The output is vague at most links, a small amount everyday = a handful every 2-3 days?

Update:

The handful amount is from the owner, maybe he meant palm full? He had some huge Koi before the present fish so I'm assuming he know what to feed them. The pond is covered with a cage to keep out predators which probably keeps out the natural food supply as well. I haven't seen the setup personally, my first feeding will be Wednesday.

Update 2:

Went by this evening, I guess a couple means at least 8 and 4" long, the food was huge flakes so a palm full was big in volume but not much in total weight. Thanks for all the answers and input from everyone. I had forgotten how relaxing watching fish eat and a little fountain bubbling can be.

The fish would be better served if fed once a week. The very worst thing people make the mistake with fish is - OVERFEEDING. Particularly if you are guessing how much to feed! Feed the smaller of the amount. Fish can go a much longer period without food than people realize.

Unless that cage is made of glass, insects - the natural food supply - still get in, and in any case - it would never be enough in a small pond.

On the first day, take a "handful" and feed a pinch or so at a time until your handful is empty. If the fish sort of quiet down and aren't as anxious to get food at the end, then they had enough. If they are just as manic at the end as they were when you began feeding.. then you could give them a LITTLE more.. But remember, the worst thing to do is overfeed!!..

An automatic feeder will not feed what the fish need. Feeding a fixed amount always will be either too much or too little as fish don't need the same exact amount every time. It could be more or less, depending on temperature, and only a person can judge that.

The 25-30 dollar automatic fish feeders are all junk unless you have a 10 gallon tank of livebearers. their compartments hold enough food for 2 fish ata feeding, maybe 3, the wheels that rotate often dont, they fall offf into the tank when everyone gets a meak dumped on their heads, they can't dispense anything but flakes and pellets as any moist food will stick to them and not come out.

There are 2 good brands. Eheim and its American subsidiaries starting with the $85 dollar model have long been considered the best. 3 The API Rena Automatic (and progrmmable) Fish Feeder lg 100. It cost $80 which is what I would expect from something that's not a toy. Aqua Chef is generally rated third, but it doesn't hold a months worth of food (only 35 grams or an ounce and a quarter).

If you think how easy it is to make an electrical timer, it makes you wonder designs the other brands that actually fall apart when they rotate.

No, the Aqua Chef will not work for a month. It may do a good job for 10 days for 2-3 fish, then it will run out. fish cannot live without food for a month. anyone relying on a pinch between the thumb and forefinger is feeding neons only/.

A handful? What are you feeding? A pinch of food between the thumb and forefinger per fish should be enough. Cold blooded creatures need a lot less fuel than we do. You feed at the rate of a handful one day and you will kill them. They could live a couple of weeks off the algae and other things they find in the water.

I have used a lamp at the bottom of a pond which was in a gallon bottle and water proofed. That light was on for one hour each night attracted enough insect to the water for 30 monster sized goldfish, I did not need to feed.

You will have to simply purchase a inexpensive automated feeder that offers out flakes it is the simplest choice and you will not ought to inventory these types of different varieties of meals, you'll purchase them at so much puppy retail outlets and if they do not have one ask them to reserve one in for you :)
