Is being a MysteryShoppers a real job?

I'm curious about how this whole system works and which websites are real and will actually mean you get paid because most of them ask you to pay $20 or so dollars and then you can get in which makes me suspicious because where is the $20 going to if the website says no training required..

For people who have been, or know others, who ARE mysteryshoppers, could you please tell me which companies or websites are real?
