Certificate of Live Birth vs. Birth Certificate?

Obama was born in the US. I get it.

But was he just not given a birth certificate? Did he lose it and replace it with a COLB? Are they the same thing? I'm confused.

What happened to his own copy of his birth certificate that his parents received when he was born? Or is that what the Certificate of Live Birth is?

Thanks!

What you receive is a cutesy souvenir not a real birth certificate.

His mother had a longer form birth certificate at one point. President Obama referred to it in his book Dreams From My Father. But he saw it when he was in High School. He may or may not have it anymore. It shouldn't really matter as either way the State is certifying that the person on the form was born in Hawaii on the date and time listed, to the people named.

The Certificate of Live Birth is a shorter abstract form that has replaced the longer form in Hawaii. Babies born after 2001 don't even have a longer form with signatures on file -- the signatures aren't being collected and there's no original paper. It's all electronic. Hawaii also stopped giving out copies of the long form to people who asked for certified birth certificates in 2001. The shorter COLB is the only one Hawaii issues. Most states have gone to the new format as it is significantly cheaper to administer electronic records.

Both formats have the same legal value. In both cases, Hawaii says that the information on the form matches exactly what is in the original birth record.

In Canada I have a birth certificate for my son - and it is small one, it only lists just his name, place and date of birth when I applied for the large birth certificate, it was called a registration of live birth, and it had his name, place, date of birth and both his parents names, dates and places of birth listed on it. (just like Obama's) In Canada both are legal. In some countries I have heard that the governments will not longer produce or make the small birth certificates any more.

The President has shown his birth certificate. Conservatives insist that specific words are used in a specific order. According to them, "certificate of birth" is not a "birth certificate. Of course it is. Different states evidently refer to the certificate differently, and they have identical meanings. I was born in NY state, and I have the original "Certificate of Birth". I also have a "Certificate of Birth Registration". I recently got my "certified birth certificate", and it's referred to as a "Certified Transcript of Birth". So, according to the conservatives, since I don't have a document that is specifically referred to as a "certified birth certificate", I'm not a US citizen.

President Obama has shown his birth certificate, and hasn't spent a nickel to hide it. On July 27, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.Res. 593, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hawaii's statehood, including the text, "Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961". The vote passed 378-0. On the other hand, McCain has never released his birth certificate to the press or to independent fact checking organizations.

A certificate of live birth is a birth certificate. However, if his father's name, Barack Obama Sr. is on that certificate, it would have to be an original due to the fact that Obama was adopted in Indonesia and when you are adopted your original is sealed. If his father, Obama Sr., is on his birth certificate then he has a problem. because his father was a British citizen and Obama would have had to denounce his British citizenship passed on from birth. Of course, having one parent, who is a citizen, does not a President make. You have to be natural born: both parents are citizens at the time of your birth and you are born on US soil. I am native born (born in PA but father was a Canadian) so I could be a Canadian citizen as well. I do find it strange that as a native born citizen I was only given a Certificate of Live Birth. No info, no parents names, just the place and the state.

His parents would have received a copy of the original. Apparently Obama does not posess that one himself. instead he has a copy of what the state of Hawaii provides to be people who requests a legal copy of the birth certificate. Instead of photo copying the original, all the data is stored in the computer system and that data is printed on a generic form. It is still considered a legal document.

Who knows what happened to the original, his mother moved around quite a bit, maybe she lost it.

Hawaii provides a COLB. It has the same legal authority.

These are nothing more than 2 different titles for the SAME LEGAL DOCUMENT. Claims of it being "different" are just smoke screening, and attempts to fabricate something.
