PROBLEM WITH FREEZER?
I have an upright freezer that is not working properly. The top two shelves are not freezing food. The temperature will not go below 40F. The frozen meat I have stored on these shelves has gone bad. I turned the thermometer down the whole way, and it made no difference.
Only the bottom two shelves are freezing at zero degrees. The food on those shelves is still frozen.
Does anyone know what could be wrong? Is it worth it to call a repairman. The freezer is ten years old, and I have seen advertisements for rebates if you trade in your freezer for a more energy efficient model.

It sounds like it is going bad to me. Small leaks are rare with refrigerators or freezers because they contain so little refrigerant that if they leak they lose it all and don't cool at all.
Odds are the compressor is failing if it is a manual defrost model . One of the most popular, and least expensive ones they make had some problems for a few years and the lifespan was not all that long compared to what we expected in the past.

The overwhelming reasons freezers ever stop freezing is a cleaning issue or a problem somewhere in the defrost circuit.
