Over 500 dogs were rescued from a MEAT market in China...!?
Saw on the news that over 500 dogs were rescued from a meat market in China. http://www.vancouversun.com/life/After+hour+stando...
Why do they eat dogs? Don't they have the knowledge to know that these animals have been our companions for ages and ages?
If it's a cultural tradition, I can respect that, but I CANNOT accept the horrid conditions in which these dogs are kept before being slaughtered. Horrid is an understatement.
To: Donna Reid = Some of the dogs were TAINTED MEAT!! They were sick, injured, and some were infected with parvo. So not only are they mistreating dogs, but also the people that eventually eat them.
Additional Details= I am very well aware of the awful conditions that pigs, cows and chickens live in before ending up in our grocery stores, but this isn't the topic I posted about...nor is it for the dog section. I always pay extra for 'free range' and cage free organic meat, however even those conditions aren't ideal....just a little bit of an improvement.
To Scarlet Irene= There IS euthanized cat/dog meat in SOME of the dry food we feed our dogs, but they fall under the ingredient 'Animal By-Products'....so just avoid brands who list that as an ingredient.

I know it's terrible.. but you know pigs and cows are all intelligent and loving animals too. I don't know how anyone can treat any animal the way our societies do. It's not just dogs, it's every kind of animal.. and we abuse them all. You know when I was young my parents had pigs and chickens to eat. I hated it, because I got to know every one of them and they were just as loving as any dog. I used to play tag with my friends pig, and she was lucky enough her parents had it for breeding and not slaughter. Every pig I knew had it's own personality, it's own life and unique individuality.. and while they were treated well, in the end they were mercilessly slaughtered and eaten. I could never eat any of them, I always refused.
We had this one chicken, baby and all the other chickens picked on her so we had her out of the coop and loose in the yard. Eventually she grew into a nice bird without all the others picking on her and she was super friendly. She had her own personality too. All of the chickens did, and no matter how much people lie to themselves and say chickens are stupid it just isn't true. I've seen them be courageous and loving, friendly and noit so friendly. We had a laying hen that was my sisters pet and that chicken lived for soo long, and was soo lovable. She would protect all the babies and was a gentle soul.
So I can't see why people hate so much on the chinese for doing the same thing to dogs that we do to chickens, pigs, cows and all sorts of other fur bearing animals on fur farms, horses, cats, everything.. we kill, torture, neglect, abuse, starve, slaughter and eat, burn, cut, shoot, poison.. all of them.. Until our whole society, and the whole human race realizes that every living thing deserves respect and compassion.. it will continue.
People think people are the only living thing that thinks and feels and is aware.. and that is how we justify the things we do by putting the animals we want to eat into that category to justify what we do. Until we all realize that none of them are "JUST" a dog or JUST a cat or JUST a pig.. and not a person.. this horror will continue.
Next time you eat bacon remember that pig had just as much love and personality to give as any dog..

Firstly - not all chinese eat dogs or agree with it (note how it was a chinese guy who decided to rescue them)
secondly - its actually very uncommon now. if you go to a restaurant in the big cities (i can only comment on beijing and shanghai where i used to live) most menus will not contain dog food
Theres a lot of focus on china...but its not the only country to do so
As other people said - whether its right or not to eat them is subjective. Vegetarians would say all meat shouldnt be eaten and a veg friend of mine made me watch videos where chickens where fed to increase their size so quickly that their little legs snapped. And frankly, battery animals and slaughterhouses aren't lovely places too. So the people (like me!) who merrily eat cows, chickens, goats, ducks etc etc are probably a little bit hypocritical when we say dog meat eating is wrong.
Would i eat dog personally? no.
all animals should be kept in the best conditions possible.

I know this sounds crass, but, they don't treat those "food" dogs any worse than we treat our "food" cows, chickens and pigs and pigs are smarter than dogs!
Dogs have not been companions for ages and ages, they have been domesticated for "ages and ages" they have only been used for simple companionship for around 300 years, before that dogs had to earn their keep just like any other domestic animal.
In Asian countries most people see dogs and cats the same way they see a cow or chicken, food.
You want to see horrid conditions? Go to any large chicken farm! You want to see cruelty, google veal calves.
We can not rescue every animal on the planet and bring it here to go up for "adoption", who will "adopt" the ones right here that need homes?
Edit: So, you asked a bunch of random strangers and now you are dismissing all our answers? What, did you expect everyone to rush off to China to "rescue dogs" with you? Or were you just looking for juvenile validation, like this: O M G da pow wittow doggies, wet's all make a petition to stop this and make ourselves feel all warm and fuzzy inside while we eat veal and get rid of our dogs because we're too lazy to train them.
Is that better?
Source(s): 30+ years pro dog groomer, trainer, exhibitor, hobby breeder @ Kunzy, they do not taste like chicken, they taste like like an oily mix between cow and pig. The Lakota Sioux only eat long haired dogs, they claim they taste better, I wouldn't know, I've only had long haired, I haven't ever tried short haired dog. - Anonymous1 decade ago
Ever seen where food animals are being kept here? Cows, pigs, poultry, hell, even horses. Most aren't kept in the best conditions before slaughter either. In some cultures, it's taboo to eat these animals as well, but most people do anyway.

Oh wow. I did not know they use other regular breeds of dogs for meat markets. I read once upon a time ago that Chihuahuas were a breed of choice in China for meat. They had tender meat which was highly favored in the Chinese culture and used it in their food. It is also less expensive for them. That's why Chihuahuas are over breed-ed and are so many of them today when this began, but now they have been domesticated into a family pet of choice rather than a Chinese meat market. The Chinese still use this breed in the processing of their meats. I see they have moved onto other dogs of choice for tender meat? It is quite disturbing, but you have to understand it's their cultural tradition in choice of food product too. It's easy access for them and easy to breed. This has been dated back centuries ago when dogs were used for their food processing of meat. In America it's unthinkable to have dogs used as food to eat. The dog is a family pet and a part of our family as well as society. Think about cows, buffalo, pigs. Those are our food sources when it comes to ground beef, sausages, steak, etc. Many of them are treated the same way in a slaughter house. Let's beef them up with hormones to produce thicker and more meat oh not to forget the added antibiotics as well as other injections into their bodies we end up consuming later when cooked. Why take care of them as if they are a pet when they are only going to be slaughtered anyway right? That's how they think with the dogs too in their slaughter houses.
I don't like to see dogs used for food consumption either. I understand cultural traditions where it makes it ok in that culture, but not ours. I'm a dog lover don't get me wrong, but it's hard for me to crap on a culture of a different race because they do something different than we do in our country.
Now what really concerns me is majority of our dry dog food on our shelves today comes from China. God I hope there is not processed dogs in our own processed dry dog food that OUR dogs eat. I suppose that is why it says meat by products. You don't know what it is! I feel that's a subject that needs to be cleared up by the F.D.A.!!

Ever see the PETA videos on Youtube of the horrible mistreatment of cows, pigs, and chickens in American farms? This problem is worldwide.
And there's nothing wrong with eating dogs. Yeesh. People in the developed world eat rabbit and duck which are also sometimes kept as pets. Are you going to be whining about that?

Because dogs are like cattle to us. It IS Culture!! I would be more concerned selling tainted meat to the public. The key word is "OUR" Companions. Not theirs! They are not the West. You are speaking of a country that is tradition and culture is entirely different from ours. Do you know families in CHINA are only allowed to have ONE child? They prefer BOY babies to females and female infants are dumped in orphanages to die??? There are videos of this atrocity on youtube! If a girl infant gets sick in the orphanage they are not treated by a dr but just allowed to die, alone. In a DEATH room!! I find helping dogs trivial to this.

Its didnt just start yesterday its the way the world is some countries worship cows while we eat them like its nothing its the same standpoint for them it is what it is what can you do?
But ya I still cant see how they dont recognize dogs as being more intelligent and useful

The good thing about the story is that some people in china cared enough to rescue the dogs.

yeah i know. it's exactly the same as they do with cows and chickens and pigs here though. in china, dog is food. just like lots of people take cows chickens and pigs for food. they treat them all the same. over there, they'll probably be shocked knowing we do that to cows. they'll be like, "how could you, they are our friends and they serve us so well..." same thing.
Source(s): after researching enough, i couldn't eat meat anymore. haven't eaten any in 13 years.
