Massive improvement today? + What bit do you use?

I have a Haflinger and as anyone who has ever ridden a Haflinger knows, they are STRONG. :) Mine is extremely responsive but if we get going fast and I try to slow down, I'm not strong enough for him to tell if I want him to slow down or collect. This isn't a problem because I just say TROT and he will always come down nicely, but since we want to compete talking isn't allowed and I have been trying to lift weights but it just wasn't helping. He's in a KK D-ring snaffle and he does really well in it, but just to see if it would help my trainer got out a pelham and took off the bit converters. I asked for a canter and when I asked for a trot he immediately came down without any voice commands, and oddly enough he was MUCH happier in it. He tucked his head nicely and went on the bit without even being asked. My trainer says it's because he now knows exactly what I want, which is comforting to him. It was just an awesome day :)

So my question to you all is:

What type of bit do you use, and for what kind of horse/discipline? :)

Update:

Wasabi: I know how to do a one-rein stop. I'm not going to do one every time I make a downward transition though! I weigh less than eighty pounds and have a disease that has made so weak I can't pick up my ten pound cat. I can assure you that his mouth is fine :)

If you have problem's lifting and working with your arms, it would be better to train your horse to listen to your seat aids to stop, turn, increase speed etc.

You'll also probably find the only reason he works better for you in a pelham is because it is a stronger bit and he respects it a lot more, which isn't really what you want. You want him listening to you rather than the bit in his mouth.

I would personally, put you on a lunge rein and start working on your seat aids, improving them and making them more commanding. In fantasy, a perfectly trained horse doesn't actually need a bit in it's mouth and the rider works mainly from his/her seat. In won't be easy, nothing with horses ever actually is, but starting on a lunge line, remove your reins from the bit and either hold your arms out to the side or get a neck strap or a D ring strap and hold that in your normal riding position. Start in a walk and when you ask your horse to halt, sit really tall and deep in the suddenly and say WHOA or HALT in a nice clear voice so that he understands what you want. When you ask him to walk on again, push slightly with your seat bones and squeeze with your legs at the same time you ask him to WALK. After time you can soften your voice commands and use only your seat commands until your horse starts to respond to the tiniest movement from you. It's not easy and will take a lot of time re-schooling him, but in the end it will help you a lot and you will have a much more responsive horse.

Normally I use a Loose Ring Elliptical Link Snaffle on most of my horses but sometimes I have used different variations, the elliptical link being my fav.

I love Pelhams, because when they're used right, the horse hardly ever hates them (in my experience). Good to see you've found something that works for you :)

My Oldenburg mare goes in a soft rubber mullen D-ring. We figured out she didn't like the jointed snaffles, and this one really encourages her to come down into my hands and use her hind end. She's just making her debut in the Hunter ring. She won a HOF class at our last schooling show ^-^

My OTTB goes in a Boucher, french link. With him, it was an easy choice, because I knew I'd need that poll pressure to encourage him to go into a frame, and so far it's been effective. He's just now started going into training, so we'll probably have to switch it eventually once we figure out what direction we're going.

My App goes in a french link Happy Mouth, and he loves it. He naturally wants to go round, so he'll go in just about anything, but the HM is his favourite. He did Hunters (now retired)

I use a full cheeked snaffle on my 6yr old Arabx. We do low level dressage/showing and pony club. Shes got a nice soft mouth. :)

When I just hack her out however, I do it in a rope halter with the lead rope attached. Shes actually more collected bitless, but less sharp off the aids so I do the harder stuff (jumping, dressage, etc) in a snaffle.

all horses are strong. doesn't matter what breed he is.

your trainer should be teaching you about one rein exercises, never ever about pulling hard back on the reins.

the more bend work you do, and the more you use your seat and legs (go ahead and have strong leg cues, but never strong hard heavy hands)......the better things will get.

as for bits....everyone should stick with a snaffle bit (snaffles have no shanks) until they have strong seat and leg cues and know never to use the bit like a handbrake.

I use a Dr Cook's Bitless for all the horses I ride.

I use a full cheek snaffle for english for my mares. http://www.bitandbridleshop.com/images/260035-full...

But for western I use a tom-thumb with rollers for my walker. http://www.bluegrasshorsesupply.com/shop/images/pr...

And for my paint I use a regular snaffle with mecate reins and sometimes a bosal. Really depends on what I'm doing.

i in my opinion choose Communism fairly frankly. human beings frequently associate dictatorship like Hitler and Mussolini with Communism. it relatively is fake. Hitler and Mussolini have been the full opposite of Communist. right it relatively is slightly bit historic past data for you ignorant human beings: the notice communist is derived from the notice "commune" or "community". by skill of definition, a Communist united states of america is a rustic that's easily run by skill of the persons; there's no government; all and sundry works at the same time and all and sundry does what they must do to be triumphant at the same time. look as though a utopia? it would.. Communistic counties won't manage to be corrupt. in the event that they do, then they're by skill of definition no longer Communist. besides, I completely accept as true with this question. It relatively comes right down to the actuality that Republicans are too corrupt to provide up the only ingredient their solid at: growing to be extra corruption and gaining extra ability. only look at McCarthy the Commie hunter. He replaced into Republican and he replaced into truthfully ability hungry. Republicans continuously whine that Democrats are not being bipartisan (which, in Republican words, skill doing precisely what they like). i prefer Communism, they like corrupt Capitalism. enable's detect a gathering spot: Socialism. The ignorant conservatives who won't manage to verify that don't need to have a say of their united states of america. What united states of america is doing fairly nicely for themselves in this worldwide recession? What united states of america is seen the happiest in the worldwide? Norway, an exceptionally socialist united states of america. bite on that, Republicans.
