Question for paintballers with experience?

I used to play on a three man team and we did very well in the Canadian tournament. This was about 6-7 years ago. I had a smart parts impulse with an eye and an halo hopper e trigger. I could walk it to about 20-22 bps. I paid a lot of money back then for it. I'm curious what would be an equivalent marker by today's standers that is tournament legal. When I retired the dm 5 was just being released and it was going for over 1000. There are so many options out there now and I'm thinking about playing again. I would like to keep my budget around 300-500 for a marker and go from there. I also was amazed how accurate my impy was I had a freak barrel system and it rocked. Any opinions welcome.

Where's your Imp now? That thing is still a beast, i say just use that if you still got it. Same with the hopper & barrel - people still rock halos and freaks. Before you hear from someone else, Smart Parts recently went bankrupt, but they came back as GOG Paintball. They no longer make the Impulse or Shocker, though.

If you like how your Imp shot (and you don't have it anymore), then you'll probably want to stick with similar guns, the poppit-valves like the Eteks ("poor man's" Ego, although the Etek3 is essentially an Ego now), actual Egos, Fusions (made by Dangerous Power, a newer company), Bob Long G6R (it's the new Intimidator, but with internally milled airways, no external hoses), couple others.

Invert Mini and Empire Axe are a new kind of poppit, an inline poppit as the valve sits behind the bolt in a single tube body. The Mini is as small as the name implies, has no hoses anywhere, the foregrip houses the battery and board, the asa IS the regulator, with an aluminum tube running inside the grip to supply air to the solenoid and valve/bolt assembly... it's very compact. The Empire Axe is the same gun but with a longer frame/body (many people, including myself, had an issue with the Mini being TOO small) and the asa has an on/off that it desparately needed.

Believe it or not, for $300, you can almost get TWO used DM5's. Resale value in paintball is ridiculously low, which is actually not at all strange considering automobiles are the exact same way. I recently picked up a DM7 w/ Tadao-flashed board (stock board, but Tadao programming) for $275. The gun is like new. Brand new DM's (we're up to DM11 now) are still over a grand.

On that same token, you can get a used Ego 07 for $300, maybe even an Ego 08 if the seller was looking to sell fast. The Impulse of your memories goes for about $100-150 used nowadays, at most.

The best guns you can get for that price range is either the Empire Axe or the Etek 3 LT

The Empire Axe is the more comfortable version of the invert mini basically and has all the upgrades you can get for the invert mini (trigger, On and Off ASA).

Etek 3 LT is always a good choice. (Has an On Off ASA, Poppit design, efficient, easy maintainence in my opinion)

Overall these are the two best guns for the 300 - 500 range, either one will work great
