I drive a 2007 Taurus. A fleet car, not my own. The odometer has a readout that gives an average MPG. Is it?

that gives an average MPG. Is it anywhere near accurate? I find it hard to believe that I'm getting 30 mpg or better. Please don't tell me to record my mileage between fill ups. I know how to do that. Just wondering what the readout does.

It really depends on what car. Some can be very accurate, and some can be way off. But most are pretty accurate or maybe 1-2mpg off.

Not impossible-- if your driving is mostly interstate & quality state roads and your peed is generally between 55 -70 mph..

I have a 2000 Taurus with the regular 3.0 L engine- I've measured it on several occasions with one high result of 36mph. , more often like 31-32 mpg.

It should be pretty accurate. The ECU knows with great precision how much fuel it is calling for to be injected, how many times a second, and how far you are going. The greatest imprecision is the fuel pressure. Expect about 5-10% accuracy.
