Foam Gasket raises tank too high on new toilet bowl. Any ideas?

Hello,

First time installer of a new toilet here. I got the following model from Lowes:

http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=989...

The tank is supposed to be secured to the bowl using two screws with rubber washers on them. In the middle of everything, there is a large foam gasket, that goes between the bowl and the toilet. Exactly like the one seen here:

My problem is that the foam gasket raises the toilet too high up off the bowl, thus creating a wobbly tank (it wobbles front to back). I'm afraid of tightening down the screws any more so that I don't break the china. Am i supposed to invert the gasket? I have followed the directions to every word, several times over, and cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Any tips?

Thanks,

J

Update:

EDIT: I have figured it out. They packaged the wrong freaking gasket!! I'm going to leave this question up in case anyone has the same issue.

It's suppose to be a smaller gasket. If it wobbles, they gave you the wrong one.

Update 2:

EDIT Part 2: The box was partially torn open, so I'm guessing this was opened once before and the wrong gasket was replaced in it. Yes, it was definitely different than the other gasket one I happened to find laying around in the other bathroom's closet. At least an inch less in diameter. The confusing thing is, both gaskets "fit" - the larger gasket fits around the entire circular frame, and the smaller one fits around the bottom smaller lip.

I thought it is rubber. Look for the rubber gasket the foam may just be used for shipping thats why its to big. Remove the foam and the rubber may be behind it!

I really doubt they sent you the wrong gasket. For the most part they are all the same size. You have to make sure the gasket goes on the nut on the bottom of the tank securely ( it shouldn't fall off by gravity). So don't be afraid to tighten down the bolts. There is a reason it is a foam gasket. You want to tighten the bolts down hard enough so there is almost no play at all on the tank to the bowl. I've been plumbing for 5 yrs and have had no toilets break because of over tightening the tank to bowl bolts.
