Why do people wear things to get attention, then become indignant when they get it?

I took my daughter to an Easter egg hunt with a friend. Another mother there had on a very strange-looking dress. It was blue and very low cut with an odd white something poking out barely covering her breasts. The dress was strapless, but she also had a pink polka-dotted bra sticking out, which was very obvious by the straps and with the back showing above her dress. My friend and I were debating on what that white piece was. Was it part of her dress, or was she wearing two bras? It was just very strange and ill-fitting. In trying to figure this out, we were apparently staring. The woman snapped, "What are you looking at?" which was obviously embarrassing. The point is, why wear something as ridiculous as that to purposely gain attention, then get angry when someone notices?

You should have said "I'm looking at your dress." It's true, and not necessarily rude to say. You could always point out to her that her bra is showing. It might send the message that she's suffering from a wardrobe malfunction. It's probably not terribly polite but I'm not sure wearing the outfit makes very much sense. It might be a sign she's a bit off (like crazy).

Some people do that and I think it is ignorant of them. Several years ago on the Apprentice one of the teens asked a professional coach or team-owner why he was wearing a huge gold ring with the team logo on it. She was later informed that it was very rude of her to mention the ring. ( I'm no sports fan so bear with me. At the time he was questioned, he explained it was to commemorate his team winning the super bowl or some similar event.)

Maybe she wasn't doing it to get attention. Maybe that is just her taste. i can see that you are probably nicely trying to say she was dressed a little trashy. She may just like that 'look' and she thinks it shouldn't matter. She probably also thinks it is nobodies business and they still shouldn't stare. People with manners are taught that at a very young age

BC people like the IDEA of it, in their closet, at home. Then actually wearing it in public, with eyes on you - and who knows if the 'eyes' are looking nice or not - is different. Besides she probably thought you were cooler or prettier than her and she got defensive.

Maybe it wasn't for attention. Maybe it was just her style, and no one has ANY right to judge anyone. Staring can be perceived as rude sometimes, and although that wasn't your intention, it is possible she perceived it as such.

I don't get indignant, I appreciate the extra attention!
