Please suggest a Nikkor tele lens for my camera. Looking at all the options, I'm kind of confused.?

Lenses in the DX format.

Are there tele lenses from any other brand that might be suitable for me?

Update:

I click pictures of mostly buildings, landscapes, animals and birds. And sometimes people.

It depends on what you want to shoot. A nice, inexpensive telephoto is the 55-200mm VR at just over $200 new or about $160 refurbished. If you want more reach, the 70-300mm VR costs about $470 refurb or $520 new. A third option is the 55-300mm VR, for about $320.

I've only used the 55-200mm lens, and for what it's worth, it's a pretty good lens. It lets you get a little closer to the action, but it may not be long enough for anything serious.

There are always the Nikon original lenses to choose from, but also there are several manufacturers that make what is called third party or independent lenses. Lenses that fit your camera, often at a better price point. Sometimes you could argue that the original lens manufacturers makes the better lens, but that isn't always true. The independent lens maker can adapt their lenses for different cameras so they have larger customer base, thus giving them a larger development budget for their lenses. Good makers are Sigma and Tamron just to mention two of the more well known.

Depending on what you want to take pictures of you need a different lens.

Like to take close ups of flowers or insects; Get a macro lens like a 50mm macro or 100mm macro, the longer 100mm for a larger working distance to the object.

Do you like to take broad sweeping landscapes; go for a wide angle zoom like a 10-20mm zoom.

Do you want to take wild life photography or shoot sports; you need to get a zoom lens like something at least between 50-150mm or longer like a 70-200 or 70-300mm zoom lens. To get really close to birds and other wild game you might need up to 400mm or 500mm lens.

The jack of all trades are a 18-50mm or 16-70mm or there about (for full size sensor camera a 28-100 mm lens or there about).

For more exact information on the better lenses to choose from either use a search engine or try Dpreview or any other larger test site.
