    For civilian aircraft the race is not for speed it is for fuel economy. The concept had technical challenges that they were not sure could be overcome, huge budget concerns, and the probability that if it were designed and built no one could afford to use it.

    It can be said to be ahead of its time in that it was technologically too ambitious.

    The cancellation of any one project does not permanently end the advancement of technology.

    short answer: fuel costs. speed costs money, and people will not pay to go supersonic.

    read up on the Concorde.
