Is the book, Huckleberry Finn, still read in High School here in the US as it used to be,?
or has it become too socially controversial a book to be included in high school reading lists?
I am corresponding with a fellow from Russia, and he mentioned the book. I am 60 years old and I read it as assigned reading in high school, but I wasn't sure if it was still included anymore, so I wasn't quite sure what to tell the Russian man. Thank you all very much for the information that you all have given.

I would think Huckleberry Finn would be considered less controversial now because radical racism isn't nearly as popular, tolerated, or prevalent as it has been in past times.
I obviously can't speak for all US schools but I read it back when I was in high school and my little brother who is still in high school read it last year.

If anything, it has become less socially controversial and is seen more for what it is, a work of literature, art. I read it in high school three years ago.
Then again, I live in California.

I know that it has been banned in a few (if not many) schools because of the language and such. But my class is currently reading the book (I'm a junior in high school).

I taught Jr. high english and was told the children could choose it as a book report book for themselves, but I could not assign it to them due to the racial terms. It was this way with Tom Sawyer as well.

They printed a censored version of the book -- can you believe that? Many schools are using it.
