I have a Canon MP530 all in one printer will it print with only a new black cartridge inserted?

Hello I hope all is well.

I have a Canon MP530 all in one printer. Even though it is 7 years old, it still works. Over the past year, I have been unable to buy the tanks of ink for all colors, cyan, magenta, yellow, pigment black and black. However it has still been printing black at least until recently. I went and purchased a new black cartridge, just the black, not the pigment black nor the rest of the tanks. So I put that new black cartridge in and it won't print a thing. What I want to know is does the printer just continuously print only when there is more than one tank with ink and also do I have to buy the rest of the tanks to do so?
