Have you heard of grammar Nazis in other languages?

For those who aren't familiar with the term, grammar-Nazis are those people who get a rush out of correcting other people's English in messageboards, forums, Youtube video comments etc.

What I wanted to know is whether this phenomenon is as prevalent in other languages, besides English. I have been on a few French messageboards and didn't find any grammar-nazis. I'm also a member of many hindi forums, where I don't notice pathological grammar correction.

Is there something about the English language that makes people do that?

Yes, there are such people in other nations, but somehow the English language lends itself to that sort of thing because the rules are so lax.

I am French and I live in Germany, I can say that there are definitely less (oops, I mean fewer) such idiots patrolling the net in search of grammar mistakes.

I don`t know if there are but my pet hate is spelling mistakes, there is a spell check there to use and yet they still spell words incorrectly, the other thing that I hate is lazy typing such as "gr8" "m8"

"4ever"and "b4", I can understand using this method using a mobile phone because it takes longer to text on a phone but when you have a keyboard in front of you, how much longer does it take to type in the extra letters? I hate having to decipher these comments, as for grammar, there is no help here for that and a little bit of common sense would be better than a criticism.

Maybe not on the net, but there are definitely French people who live to point out people's grammar mistakes. Possibly they're older and less tech-savvy.

We don't do it for a kick , we do it because we are trying to preserve the language . The down side of having given our language to the world is that it is constantly mutilated by the rest of the world and even a large part of our own population .
