I believe I would visit many of the islands in Micronesia. In the 1960's , as a Peace Corps volunteer, I lived in the district of Truk (now Chuk) on the small island of Fefan. The District of Truk was the main Japanese fleet base of the Pacific. In February of 1944 the American, “Operation Hailstone”, all but destroyed the Japanese fleet. Approximately 12 warships, 32 merchant ships and 250 planes were destroyed. “Operation Hailstone” was also called the Japanese “Pearl Harbor”. Most of the ships sunk in the lagoon are accessible to divers and it is one of the most famous diving sites in the world. I know that there are a few nice hotels now but the lagoon itself is awesome just to sit and enjoy! If you like history and don’t have to have a resort hotel, Truk is definitely worth considering. There are lots of pictures and articles about Truk on the net to help with research. Good Luck!

The Hawaiian island of Kauai. It's beautiful there and has lower tourist traffic than Oahu or Maui. Definitely a great place to get away from it all. They sell bumper stickers there that say "If you like Kauai, tell your friends about Maui."

Huahine, in French Polynesia. I've seen it from the air, but I'd like to see it up close.

Source(s): Been to about 5 dozen tropical islands, and all the others are bad. Hawaii is a US State, with US standards. Other "tropical islands" are full of garbage, child prostitutes, and crime. - 1 decade ago
