Has anyone tried fenugreek capsules to impove breast milk supply?
My son has had a lot of trouble breast feeding. He was born 26 days ago and just in the last few days he has finally started latching well and feeding well. I have been taking him to the breast feeding clinic twice a week since he was born, I have been using nipple shield as well as pumping and bottle feeding ...so he has been getting breast milk the entire time. However I worry my milk supply is not enough for him, even if I pump about every 2 to 3 hours I only get about 2-3 ounces. My lactation specialist recommended I take fenugreek capsules, it's a natural supplement that's supposed to improve milk supply, I just started taking them two days ago.
Has anyone else tried them? Did you notice they worked well? Did you continue taking them or just take them until your supply increased and then stop?

Your milk supply is still being established at this point. Pumping is absolutely NO indication of how much you are producing, a baby will get far more than even the best pump. One thing that will totally hinder your production is nipple shields. Baby will never get a proper latch using one, and will not get enough milk while you are using one. You will need to find a good lactation consultant who will teach you how to get baby to latch without the shield. I did take fenugreek capsules and drank the mother's milk tea and they really didn't seem to make a noticeable difference in my production. As long as baby is making at least 6 wet diapers a day he is getting enough milk.

Yes, I took both the fenugreek capsules and tea bags during the first three months after delivery to help my milk supply upon the pediatrician's recommendation. I can't tell if they were the reason my milk supply was good or other factors, but it wouldn't harm taking them at all.
You should also make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Also, if only 3 ounces comes out from your breast, stop for a second, massage and stroke your breast and try to pump a little bit more. By time, the supply will increase.
I have been breastfeeding until today and my baby is six months old. There will be days when your supply will decrease, but all you have to do is keep breastfeeding.

I took fenugreek capsules along with mother's milk tea. I do think that they helped a little bit, but it wasn't drastic. It's probably different for everyone so it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

Nurse on demand... The more she nurses the more milk you will produce. It may take 24 to 48 hours for your milk supply to increase... But it will. Then she will go back to her regular eating habits until the next growth spurt. Keep yourself hydrated. Don't do what another poster has stated and give formula unless you want to change to a bottle. That will allow your milk supple to continue to disappear. Not increase it.
