Because most obituaries are now paid for by family members, rather than being News items used as filler.

Not always but some people consider it morbid.
You sometime see "...dies on March 21st after a long battle with cancer"
or
"...die peacefully at home after a short illness"
The exception is a public figure when people WANT to know more.

People sometimes state the reason, but only if it's an "appealing" one. So, " died ... after a courageous battle with lung cancer" could be said, while " did from being hit by a car" is somewhat tasteless.
