I want a small dog that doesn't shed too much hair, what would you recommend?
After years of discussions my partner and I have decided to get a puppy. Thankfully he has agreed to a toy/miniature breed. At first I was looking for a Pekignese but have since learnt they malt alot. A maltese shitzu is definitely an option, but I was looking for something that not everyone else has got, but still super cute.

Cute is a matter of personal judgement; I can't help you with that.
Check here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/toy_group.cfm
That's the Toy Group.
Keep in mind that there are very small dogs in other groups: some of the terriers are very small, and there are small dogs in the Non-Sporting Group, as well.
Do your research: check out coat types, personality types, the health of the breed so you know what screenings the parents of your puppy should have passed before they were bred. Match the dog's needs and behaviors against your household, and never make your decision based on puppy photos: dogs don't stay puppies long.
The AKC also posts their show schedules on their site. Go to a few shows and meet the breeds you're most interested in face-to-face: nothing beats actual contact. Talk to the owners and handlers about what the dogs are like at home. Note: it's always best to approach these folks after the dog's been in the ring.
The AKC recognizes nearly 200 breeds; worldwide there are over 400. You can find the perfect dog.

I don't know where you live, but where I live (in Los Angeles County) there are small, low-shedding dogs frequently found at shelters. A lot of them are under the age of 2 years and sometimes you even find puppies. Breeds that are small and low-shedding include: Bichon Frise (love them, have had 2 in my life), Maltese (frequently at shelters here), Shih-Tzu (also frequently at shelters), Lhasa Apso, Yorkshire Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Poodle (mini and toy--both often found in shelters), Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, Havanese, Tibetan Terrier (not as small as some of the other breeds), Australian Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Silky Terrier, Scottish Terrier...and there are more. Good luck with your search, and again I would check out your local shelters and rescue groups first. You'd be surprised what great dogs they may have!!

Bichon frise is a SUPER cute white dog! It's a few cm taller than the maltese (maybe about 2cm)
they dont shed, no smelly-ness etc

Cavaliers are popular dogs but for good reason, they don't shed much, require minimal grooming and are very sweet natured,
You could go for a Chinese Crested if you want something different, they are also very sweet natured and stand out in a crowd.

Havanese dogs are a good small breed to get. They dont shed, theyre really cute, and they only get to about 10 pounds.

Chihuahuas don't shed much! And they are really sweet and cuddly and will sleep under the blankets on your bed. And you can teach them to high five!
