What to do about this ferret smell?

We have 2 descented, fixed female ferrets. I clean the cage with soap & water routinely, I clean the litter pan rather often, I do NOT bathe the girls but few & far between since I know that excess bathing can increase their oils thus smell...I have tried the Marshall's bi-odor stuff, doesn't work.

All that said, I finally had to move my girls to the basement because (1) I just couldn't take the smell anymore, (2) our company has stopped coming over because they can't take the smell either. Is there anything that works?

mine were the same. I know people tell you not to bath ferrets often.. But i bath mine every 2 days. And they smell beautiful lol. I have a special shampoo that doesnt strip the oils..

When i didnt bath them often they stunk and i couldnt figure out why.. But the day i bathed them pee started coming off their tail and into the bath.. So i squeezed their tail and the water turned yellow..

I think when they go to the toilet they pee on their tail and it stinks 500x worse.. So thats why i wash mine so much.. Im not letting them get around with pee all over them :-/

maybe thats why yours smell too?

Since i bath them regularly there is no smell at all..

Where is the smell coming from the ferrets themselves or their cage? If it's the ferrets I'm sure it's the oil in their fur. You can & should bathe them once to twice a month. Definitely not every 2 days. That is way too often. You can wipe them down with a wet cloth in-between baths if you must.
