Off Ice Training Questions :)?

So right now the rink 45min. away (the closest) is not offering summer ice. My parents said once or twice a month until school is out ,they will take me to the second closest rink (3 hour round trip)for lessons (during the summer we will go every other week). Anyway, I was thinking about what I can do as off ice training. So, first I have a couple of questions about PIC or Snow White roller blades (Please keep in mind I'm in freestyle 2)

~Are they worth the money?

~How do they feel compared to ice?

~ Will they improve or mess up my skating?

I also have questions about Spinners (again, I'm freestyle 2)

~ How do they feel compared to ice?

~Will they improve or mess up my skating?

~Are the metal or the plastic ones better?

Also, are there any things besides practicing jumps off ice and exercising/stretching that will improve my skating? And are there any major exercises/stretches that I don't already do that really improve your skating?

Please read my workout...(if you go to my page and look under my answered questions you should be able to find it)... (oh when you read my workout, the part about jumping and the spinner my friend told me to put in because it was part of her workout)

Thanks :)

    Roller blades:

They always feel really different than ice skates. I knew some skaters that could do double axels on them, but i never really liked the feel. Some cons of roller blades:

    * Learning to spin takes time.

    * The price is high and does not always fit into a figure skater's budget.

    * Skaters can get hurt while wearing these skates since concrete is not as forgiving as ice.

    * These skates are heavier than ice figure skates.

    * These skates move much slower than ice figure skates.

I dont think that wearing them would help you improve much at skating, because it really is different. Using regular roller blades could keep you stroking muscles strong and they are tons of fun! You could practice basic stroking, cross overs in them and work on posture.

    Spinners:

I only used the metal one (the plastic one wasn't out yet back in the day). I like them, but they also don't translate too much to ice. It was fun to screw around on, but my coaches never really saw it as an integral part of training. It help some with balance, but being without edges- it's really different. They don't mess you up, but they also don't help much.

    Best thing to do:

Stretch a ton. Stretch everyday. Join a difficult ballet class. Weight-lift. Run. Work your butt off when you get to skate, don't waste a second. Have a fun summer and just try to do whatever exercise you enjoy. You could swim or golf or hike or roller blade- it is all cross-training. The best way to improve at skating is by skating and overall fitness level. Alissa Czisney rock climbs. Just have fun.

If you have a spinner, the plastic one that's a rectangle, not the flat metal square one, then use that a lot. Also, off ice jumps do help a lot, but its hard to do toe jumps off ice because of the draw through.

Sorry I can't help with the roller skates question, I've never tried them, but if you get good answers about them, I'll probably consider getting a pair for myself.

When your parents do take you, try and do it on days that have multiple sessions of skating per day, such as one at 10am, one at 2pm, one at 5pm, etc. Then, try and convince your parents to make it a day trip, and skate for an hour or two each session so you can make the most of the day without exhausting yourself by skating 6 hours at a time.
