Was the 1980's economy in the US prosperous?
whenever i begin to do research the statistics look as though the economy was not doing very well, yet when i ask individuals about their life in the 80's they say everyone was economically sound (an exaggeration of course).
So was the economy in the 80s prosperous and if so why?

For the most part, yes. The US experienced unforeseen economic growth.
However, there was a relatively slight recession in the late 80's. At least compared to this recession.
