Trickle charger chatters and turns on and off when I try to charge lawn mower battery?

I have cleaned the contacts and when I hook it up it turns on for a few seconds and chatters, the indicator light blinks rapidly on and off and then turns off. Is the battery bad or is the trickle charger bad. Thank you for your help. Oh, I forgot to say it is a 1 or 2 amp charger.

Update:

Yes it is 12 volt, it is a 23 horsepower sears lawn tractor.

    most motorcycle lawnmower battery's are 6v make sure your battery charger has a 6v setting or your putting 12v to it.

    Are you sure the lawn mower battery is 12V?
