In Spanish, when speaking to people older than you...?

Should you use the 'tu' form or the 'usted' form? I'm going to be au pairing in Spain, and I don't want to be too informal with the parents of the children, if I'm not supposed to be!

Thanks!!

You should start using 'usted' as it is respectful. In the vast majority of cases I would expect that they would correct you and ask you to use 'Tu', but you should always wait for this invitation before you revert to the more informal version.

"Usted" and "Ustedes" is VERY respectful. So use it only when you're speaking with old people. But if you don't speak Spanish very well, don't worry, nobody will feel offended here if you make a mistake. Just try to feel relaxed when speaking Spanish.

You should use ''usted'' and ''ustedes''. And before their names put ''don'' for males and ''doña'' for females.

    E.g.

► ¡Buenos días don Álvaro! ¿Cómo está usted?

► ¡Buenas tardes doña Inés! ¿Cómo está usted?

    ► ¡Buenas noches! ¿Cómo están ustedes?

▄ When speaking to the children you can use: ''tú'' and ''vosotros''

    Have a good night! :)
