OK I got a 1983 dodge and there is a broken piece but i don't know what it is....?

my dodge ram d150 is leaking coolant out of a little container about the size of my hand on the top part of the engine that comes from the radiator and connects with another tube to the dash area. I dont know what it is called so i can replace it. it could be the thermastat but i have never seen one like it. leme know so my car doesnt kill my dogs

    This is probably the water valve that controls the flow of hot water to your heater.

    expansion tank is the proper name for it

    but some people call it the coolant bottle or reservoir.

    remember to bleed the cooling system when you replace it

    I'm guessing it is the expansion tank but if you to double check, you can look for your car's manual and check there the description of the expansion tank.
