What is the American dream to you?

To me the American dream is, an America where government policies create an environment where it makes it possible for an Individuel to achieve what ever success he or she has the dreams, drive, and dedication to do.

To me income redistribution is a perversion of the real american dream.

Your thoughts?

The American dream as originally set out was to offer to those oppressed by their own nations a place to seek a better life, through their own efforts and not tied down by the government. they could choose to be farmers big or small, to try to achieve as much success as they have the personal will to strive for. Inventive minds were encouraged to go for it (thus the U.S. patent office) The American dream never suggested you could not fail though! Rather it expected the person to strive to battle on for the goal.

The American dream did not include a provision for people to take from others to reach their goals, to harm the communities of the nation or to run from the responsibilities of another nation. It expected a person who truly wanted to be an American to actually join becoming an American. to speak the language of America so that the unity of the nation was ONE voice so all could discuss and plan the course of the nation or local communities.

Historically the american dream was to own your own home and retire in comfort. I sensed a downgrade when I saw a commercial describing getting a credit card as the american dream.

Certainly the upward income redistribution of the last 40 years is indeed perverse, and some form of correction is imperative.

I agree that a nation where a man can achieve his dream is the most admirable part of the american dream. along with that is a safety net for when someone misses the target, and the agreement that by reaching the top you give back to that which helped you achieve it.

And yes, wealth redistribution is a problem, especially since its mostly going to the rich and not the millions of people who have awful jobs and no mobility.

a minimal welfare state where the cost of living is cheap but progressive, and the government stays out of my business as much as possible. Self serving money grabbing politicians at the federal and state level telling schools what my child should learn in school is not something that is part of my American dream.
