No more than 1 million dollars. Also in need of foreign exchange administration proved with the money. Nz seems more than 1 million new currency regulations to declare, don't know right.

However, it is not recommended to carry large amounts of cash, is not a safe, 2 it is easy to incur trouble.

$10,000 or above must be reported or can be confiscated. It does not matter what country, rather due more to anti-money laundering laws that have been on the books that are even more strict since 9/11. The issue is not having to do with not being able to take more, its that you need to declare it so that there is no perceived thought that you are making an attempt to take cash across international borders to make it clean money - for example....

If you were a small merchant that had a heavy cash business that "declared" very low income. All of a sudden you try and take $50,000 in cash accross international borders to park it in another country. You would cause yourself issues.

In and out of the U.S.A. the maximum amount is $10,000. To the best of my knowledge (after 28 years living in five countries) the amount you may take with you depends upon the country ... in those which are smaller (New Zealand, for example), you wouldn't be able to take a large amount of NZ dollars out of the country due to the fact that their economy isn't among the world's largest. Also, when returning to your country of origin, you would lose money (bank fees) when exchanging one currency for another. To find out specific amounts, for particular countries, contact each country's Embassy.

If you bring in more than $10,000 in cash or negotiable instruments such as money orders, travelers checks, etc... you have to declare it. There's no limit as long as it's declared.
