how do I remove surface tree roots without harming tree?
My family kill their feet playing on the lawn and it kills my mower. Got my AX ready.

If you remove the surface roots, you will be killing the tree. Plant something under the tree that you don't have to mow and tell the family to play were there are no roots.

You cant do much now. You might be able to add a cople of inches ofd soil but that is about it. The roots came to the surfacelooking for awter because the lawn was watered every day and the water was not sinking in . In the future prevent this by watereing only 2-3 days a week and watering longer.

1.5 - 2 inch diameter roots are NOT small roots. Those are major roots and you will do serious damage to the tree if you cut them.
