Why is Productivity important to a nation's standard of living?

Because productivity determines a nations standard of living. Numbers on income, prices and wages don't mean much unless you have actually produced the goods and services that society wants to consume. If incomes rise, but the amount of goods and services stays the same... it just means those numbers have increased, but you're not any better off (materially better off at least).
